Choosing exterior colors: a Men In Paint guide for Naperville homeowners

Choosing exterior colors

By Douglas Woodruff · October 2026

Short answer

Choosing exterior paint colors for a Naperville, IL home works best as a three-part scheme: a body color, a trim color and one accent for the door or shutters. Test large samples on the sunny and shady sides of the house, and check HOA or Historic District rules before you commit.

Part 1

Start with what you cannot change

Roofing, brick, stone and windows stay put, so the paint has to work with them. Hold samples against the roof and any masonry first; a gray that looks fine alone can turn blue or green next to a brown roof. White and almond vinyl windows also limit how dark or bright the trim can go.

Look at the street too. A color that fits a wooded cul-de-sac can look loud on a block of light neutrals, and the opposite is true as well.

Part 2

Body, trim and one accent

Most good schemes have three parts. The body color covers the siding, the trim color frames windows, corners and fascia, and one accent goes on the front door, shutters or both. Keeping the accent to one place gives the house a focal point instead of a patchwork.

Contrast matters. Light body with crisp white or off-white trim reads clean; a darker body with lighter trim looks traditional; dark body and dark trim looks modern but shows dust and fading faster.

Part 3

Test big samples in real daylight

Small chips and screen previews mislead. Paint samples at least two feet square on the siding itself, on both a sunny and a shady wall, and look at them in the morning, at midday and in the evening. Colors usually look lighter and brighter outdoors than indoors, so many people choose a shade darker than they would inside.

Leave the samples up for a few days and look at them from the street. If you are unsure between two, the one you keep noticing for the wrong reasons is usually the one to drop.

Part 4

HOA approvals and the Historic District

Many Naperville subdivisions have homeowner associations with approved color lists or a review step before exterior changes. Check the rules before you buy paint, and submit samples or color numbers early so approval does not hold up your painting dates.

Inside the Naperville Historic District, exterior changes are expected to stay compatible with the house's style under the city's preservation guidelines. Older styles often suit layered schemes with distinct body, trim and accent colors, and it pays to check what the program requires before you settle on a palette.

Part 5

Finish and durability

Color choice and paint quality go together. Very dark colors absorb more heat and fade faster on south and west walls, so pick a high-quality exterior paint and expect to repaint the sunny side a little sooner. Satin or low-luster is the usual finish for siding; trim and doors often get a satin or semi-gloss so they clean easily.

Write down the final colors, product names and finishes once you decide. It makes touch-ups simple years later.
