Trim, Door & Baseboard Painting

Interior Painting · answering 24/7

Quick answer

Trim, door and baseboard painting in Naperville, IL means filling nail holes, caulking gaps, sanding and applying two coats of a hard enamel by brush. Converting stained oak trim to white adds a stain-blocking primer so the tannin does not bleed through.

The job

Trim needs harder paint and cleaner prep than walls

Trim takes kicks, vacuum bumps and hands, so it needs an enamel, not wall paint. The finish only looks sharp if every nail hole is filled, every gap caulked and every surface sanded so the enamel lays flat.

We paint trim by brush, sand lightly between coats and pick the sheen with you, usually semi-gloss or satin.

What moves the price

What trim and door painting costs

Trim is priced by linear feet and door count more than by room size.

  1. 01
    Linear feet

Baseboard, casing and crown are measured by length.

  2. 02
    Door count

Each door is painted on both faces and all edges.

  3. 03
    Condition

Dents, gaps and old drips add filling and sanding.

  4. 04
    Stained to white

Oak conversions add primer and often a third coat.

  5. 05
    Detail

Built-up crown and paneled doors take longer than flat stock.

  6. 06
    Occupied rooms

Furniture and carpet protection add set-up time.

What this job covers

A

Baseboard and casing

Baseboards and door and window casings take the most daily wear. We fill nail holes and dents, caulk the gap along the top of the baseboard and at mitered corners, sand the old finish so the new enamel grips, and cut a straight line where trim meets wall. Two coats of hard enamel go on by brush, sanded lightly between. Carpets are protected with tape and a shield, so the bottom edge of the baseboard gets painted without paint on the carpet.

B

Interior doors

Six-panel and flush interior doors are painted panels first, then rails and stiles, following the grain direction so the finish looks right. We remove or mask hinges and knobs, sand, prime bare or glossy spots and apply two coats. Doors can be painted in place or laid flat on stands for the smoothest result. Door edges are painted as well, and doors are left open to dry so they do not stick to the frame. Bifold and closet doors get the same treatment.

C

Crown molding

Crown molding sits where wall and ceiling meet, so a clean line along both edges is what makes it look finished. We caulk the gaps that open along the top and bottom as the house moves through the seasons, fill nail holes and sand, then cut in by hand against both the ceiling and the wall. Painted crown usually matches the rest of the trim, and it is painted before the walls when a room is done top to bottom.

Oak-to-white trim conversions

Turning stained oak trim white is one of the most requested interior jobs we do. Oak has open grain and tannins that bleed through white paint as yellow spots, so the trim is cleaned and deglossed, then primed with a bonding, stain-blocking primer. Grain can be filled for a smooth look or left to show through. Two coats of white enamel finish it, and doors, casings, baseboards and stair parts are usually done together so the house reads as one color.

Around Naperville

Older houses on 4th Avenue, with median build years in the 1910s and 1920s, often have wide casings, tall baseboards and built-up crown that take far longer to prep than modern stock trim. Homes on Loomis Street dating to 1890 to 1900 are known for their original woodwork, and some owners keep it stained while others choose paint. Either way, we count how many old coats are on the trim before quoting, since that decides how much sanding it needs.
