Drywall Repair & Patching

Cabinets & Prep · answering 24/7

Quick answer

Drywall repair in Naperville, IL covers nail pops, cracks, holes, water-damaged panels and plaster cracks, each patched, sanded, textured to match and painted so the repair does not show. Most repairs take two visits or two days, because joint compound needs drying time between coats.

The job

A patch only disappears if three things match

The surface has to be flat, the texture has to match the wall around it, and the paint has to be the same color and sheen. Most patches that show have failed on one of those three.

We cut back damaged material, fill and tape where needed, apply thin coats of compound with drying time between, sand flat, prime the patch and paint the whole wall so the sheen matches.

What moves the price

What moves the price of drywall repair

Repairs are priced by the number and size of patches and how they are finished.

  1. 01
    Number of repairs

A room of nail pops is priced differently from one large hole.

  2. 02
    Size of damage

Small holes are filled; large ones need new drywall pieces.

  3. 03
    Water damage

Cutting out, drying and replacing sections adds time.

  4. 04
    Texture

Matching knockdown or orange-peel adds a step.

  5. 05
    Plaster

Plaster repair takes setting compound and more coats.

  6. 06
    Painting

Painting the whole wall so the sheen matches is added to the repair.

What this job covers

A

Nail pops and cracks

Nail pops show up as small round bumps where a fastener has worked loose, often as a house settles. We drive a screw beside the pop to pull the drywall tight, set the old nail, then fill, sand and prime. Cracks at door and window corners and along seams are opened slightly, taped with mesh or paper and feathered out with thin coats, so they do not crack again in the same place next winter. Ceiling cracks along a seam get the same treatment from a ladder or plank.

Hole patching

Doorknob holes, anchor holes and the odd accident are patched by size. Small holes are filled and sanded. Larger ones get a cut-in patch: the damaged area is squared off, backed with a strip of wood, filled with a new piece of drywall, then taped and coated. Each coat of compound dries before the next, and the final coat is sanded flat under a work light so the patch does not show as a bump once it is painted.

C

Water-damaged drywall

Water-damaged drywall is soft, stained or sagging, and it has to come out once the leak is fixed and the framing is dry. We cut the damaged section back to solid material, check the insulation and framing behind it and install new drywall, taped and finished to match. Stains around the edge of the repair are sealed with a stain-blocking primer so they do not bleed through. If mold is visible on the back of the drywall, we stop and tell you before going further.

D

Plaster crack repair

Older homes often have plaster walls, and plaster cracks differently from drywall: long diagonal cracks from corners, and loose areas where the plaster has let go of the lath behind it. We reattach loose plaster where it has separated, cut out crumbling sections, fill with a setting-type compound and bridge the crack with tape so it does not reopen. Plaster patches are skimmed flat to match the hard surface around them, then primed and painted. Hairline cracks in sound plaster are simply filled and sanded.

Around Naperville

Homes in the Historic District, which covers 613 buildings dating back to the town's founding in downtown Naperville, were built long before drywall and often still have plaster walls, so their cracks need plaster repair rather than drywall patching. Many are also old enough that their paint predates 1978, and the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires contractors sanding or cutting painted surfaces in those homes to use lead-safe work practices.

Patching drywall yourself, or having us do it

Small patches are a fair DIY job. Matching texture and sheen is where they usually show.

Timing

How long drywall repair takes

Most repairs need two or three visits or days, because each coat of compound has to dry before the next one and before primer. Small nail pops and cracks can often be finished in one longer visit with fast-setting compound. Water-damaged sections take longer, since the area must be dry before new drywall goes up. We tell you the schedule when we see the damage.
